An Early Victorian Goncalo Alves Circular Breakfast/Centre/Loo Table

29" high x 51.5" diameter

An Early Victorian Goncalo Alves circular breakfast/centre/loo table. The beautifully figured goncalo alves veneered circular top, a rare and exotic wood. Goncalo alves is a hardwood (from the Brazilian Portuguese name, gonçalo-alves). It is sometimes referred to as zebra wood or tiger wood — names that underscore the wood’s often dramatic, contrasting color scheme, that some compare to rosewood.  While the sapwood is very light in color, the heartwood is a sombre brown, with dark streaks that give it a unique look. The wood’s color deepens with exposure and age and even the plainer-looking wood has a natural luster. This wood was used by the premier cabinet makers such as Gillows etc. The circular top tilts and is supported on an octagonal faceted bulbous central column, raised on a shaped platform base, terminating in bun feet with inset brass castor's circa 1850

Condition: This table is in excellent original condition, minor scuffs and scratches consistent with age and use, fully cleaned and waxed
