A Superb quality Early Victorian "Gillows" mahogany davenport. Having a brass gallery above the sloping writing surface which has the original worn green leather writing surface, which opens to reveal a birds eye maple fitted interior. The sloping top also slides forward to create a knee hole. Each side having a leather inset mahogany slide, the right hand side having four mahogany lined graduating drawers each retaining their original locks and turned drawer pulls. The left hand side having a arrangement of "dummy" drawers. The front having a beautifully figured panel which is also repeated on the back, the whole raised on four turned bun feet with inset brass castors. The veneers and choice of mahogany used in this davenport is of the very best quality circa 1850. This davenport is similar to one illustrated on page 31, plate 567 of the two volume Gillows of Lancaster and London books by Susan E.
