A Set of 8 Regency/William IV period mahogany antique dining chairs by James Mein of Kelso. The open carver arm chairs slightly larger in scale than the stand chairs, having a curved horizontal figured mahogany support with carved detail and a lower horizontal back rest, above the over stuffed tan leather seats, raised on lappet carved, turned front legs, with sabre back legs. Together with six matching stand chairs circa 1830-1840
James Mein, Roxburghe Street Kelso. The Mein family are recorded cabinet makers in Kelso from 1784- 1851. The main stay was James Mein the Elder and when he died in 1830 his nephew also called James Mein took over the business until it went bankrupt in 1851. They had many important patrons including the 5th & 6th Dukes of Roxburghe for Floors Castle and the Earl of Haddington for Mellerstain.
