A Stunning Sheraton Revival satinwood escritoire by Edwards & Roberts of London. The upper section having a shaped galleried back with quadrant shaped shelves. The central door having a wonderful inlaid central panel depicting a Classical fountain, opening to reveal a well fitted interior with the original burgundy Moroccan leather writing surface. The Lower section having cornucopia inlaid detail and floral marquetry inlaid garlands cross banded in Kingwood. Having a central frieze drawer of concave form, which is stamped Edwards & Roberts, again with marquetry floral inlaid detail, which is repeated on the bowed ends. Raised on four square tapering supports terminating in ormolu feet circa 1890-1900
Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century.
They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp.
